Well, it's here! Akshay Kumar's latest, much awaited film, Pad Man is here. And it's bleeding us dry with the reality check! (sorry not sorry for the pun)

The story of how a single man took it upon himself to help his wife be safer during her periods. Set in a small town in Madhya Pradesh, Laxmikant loves his wife with the ferocity of Salman Khan in Dabangg and the gentleness of Shah Rukh Khan in Mohabattein. Radhika Apte portrays his sweet but shy wife. When he realizes the dangers of how the women of his town deal with their periods, opening themselves up to infections that can lead to death, Laxmi decides to make his own cheap pad for them. But, as is often the case when talking about anything important, he is shunned and shut out by the very society he is trying to safeguard. But this only strengthens his determination. Accompanied by an MBA graduate tabla player, Pari, played by Sonam Kapoor, Laxmi sets out to change the landscape for the fairer sex.

The story is based on the very real struggle of Arunachalam Murugananthamm who used animal blood to test out the pads and was almost left by his wife because of his 'blasphemous' ideas. Watch him talk here.

The movie, although fictionalized to a large extent, (change in name, place, situation) and dramatized a tad too much, is a film for the masses. The director, Mr. R Balki, known to driven by content, picked up this story from Kumar's wife, Twinkle Khanna's book. Mrs. Funnybones is incidentally the producer of the film. Akshay Kumar lends his incredible charisma and simplicity to the character, making it easy to sympathize and love him. He portrays the gentleness yet the perseverance of a love-lorn man perfectly. Radhika Apte, on her side, known for her role in 'Stories by Rabindranath Tagore' plays the naive, superstitious, blindly religious wife incredibly, not trying to overact, as is often the case. The cast does incredibly to bring the story onscreen, credit obviously extending to Mr. Balki. The music, composed and produced by Amit Trivedi is another beautiful addition to the production. He captures the small town vibe with his usual expertist and genius, especially in 'Aaj Se Teri', sung by Arijit Singh.
