ALIA BHATT. MEGHNA GULZAR, VICKY KAUSHAL.

OH.

MY.

GOD.

This has to be one of the most beautiful Bollywood films I have seen IN MY LIFE. Scratch that. I mean, IN ALL MY LIVES.

After Udta Punjab, Alia Bhatt's acting chops were quite well proven. And now, I just...I don't even know any more.

The story of a father descended from a line of spies who marries off his daughter into a Pakistani army family so that she can gather intelligence about an on coming war. As the young bride settles in her new home and starts transferring information to her superiors, she learns the incredible risks one must take to save millions. Alia Bhatt stars as Sehmat, the young spy. Vicky Kaushal is her husband, the son of a major officer in the Pakistan army. Rajit Kapur acts as Sehmat's father, who gives up his only child for the country's sake. Jaideep Ahlawat is the heartless, yet sympathetic Indian espionage head who looks over Sehmat's shoulder all the way.

First of all, let's talk about Vicky Kaushal.

There. All done.

JK. JK.

He starred in Netflix's first Indian production, and actually performed quite well. But, here, he REALLY makes us fall in love. He plays the noble groom, oblivious husband and an incredibly conflicted son, soldier and lover all BEAUTIFULLY. He pulls every expression flawlessly at the right time. There is no forced guilt. He is the main reason Sehmat and Iqbal's love story seems effortless. When the last scene takes place, and he dies, (spoiler alert haha: oh, shut up you should've seen it by now) the pain is real, both for Sehmat and the audience.

Next: Alia Bhatt.

SHE. ROCKS. MY. WORLD. She has looked the part and played it so amazingly, that there is really nothing more to say. The aesthetics of the film do show the purity of her character's true nature, but she simultaneously displays innocence and betrayal like the faces of the same card. For all we know, she actually is the spy and stardom is her second career. We really wouldn't know. She's Morse Coding Anil Kapoor at the CBI Headquarters for all we could know.

Special mention: Rajit Kapur as the patriotic spy is quite an incredible character. He does not overplay the devotion to his country as is often the case. (cough, cough ref: Parmanu) He fits in a loving father and dedicated countryman into the tiny timeframe he was given quite well. Also, Jaideep Ahlawat plays the empathetic and terrifyingly stone faced Khalid, who not only fights to save his protege, but also reveals the terrible soullessness of espionage in himself.

And now.....(drum roll), MEGHNA GULZAAAAAAARRRRRRR.

When I watched her last film, Talvar, I loved it. Mysteries and crime thrillers, especially real life crime never escapes the attached unnecessary emotional angle when Bollywood does it, but she did it. And with a cast to die for.

This time, she slayed us all with a bigger story, a better script, a greater film.

The music: Unbelievable.

The dialogue: Will probably make you cry.

The direction: Will definitely make you cry.

She is proving the case for female directors for Bollywood. This proves how much we need women behind the screen. She and Zoya Akhtar are the crusaders of this war. And like the one in Raazi, we will most likely win this one too.
